Toughing it Out in Tough Times - Survival Tips

How do you deal with tough times, especially these times? They are like no other times we've known in modern times. Yet, they are the times of our life, and whether we like these times or not, we're stuck with them, and learning to manage our lives within them is a challenge. Following are the "Three Rs" of toughing it out in tough times.

Resolve
When you're up to your neck in alligators, it's hard to remember that your main objective was to drain the swamp. Yet, your job is to drain the swamp. If you're going to accomplish draining the swamp or succeeding in toughing it out in tough times, you've got to have resolve.

Resolve simply means to be determined, relentlessly determined. You make up your mind to succeed, plant the image, and keep going. The tougher it gets, the tougher you must get, and when it gets tough, remember the words of one of the toughest men in history, Winston Churchill, who said: When you are going through hell, keep going. In other words, don't stop here! Don't stop in the middle of the tough times! Tough them out. Churchill also said, You only have to endure to conquer. His advice is great counsel. Keep going and endure. That's resolve.

Resilient
Sometimes in tough times, the tough times get to us. That's normal. So what? Keep going. Remember Churchill's quotes? Being resilient means being able to bounce back in spite of being set back. There's no disgrace in falling down, but there is disgrace in not getting back up. So get up. If you have to, cry a little. Cry a lot. Whine, complain, get angry, shout, scream if you have to, but get up! Be resilient. Bounce back, don't flop back.

Resourceful
Being resourceful means dealing with difficulties and finding solutions to those difficulties. Nobody ever said life would be easy. God never made any such promises. Life is full of tough times, tough problems. There's no way around it. So how do you deal with life? You deal. That's it. You don't hide or run away from your problems either literally or figuratively. And you don't jump in and drown your troubles in some bottle or pill. You'll only find more trouble in there. Lots of trouble. You simply deal. That's what you do. What else is there to do? Quit. Sorry, not an option. Quitting is anathematic to the human spirit. Find a way to deal with your difficulties and find solutions to them. You can. Because we live in a dual dimension, every problem naturally has its own built-in solution. Tough times have their problems but their solutions lie within them. That's one of the beautiful secrets of life. Go within yourself and find those solutions. The answer's there, inside. Sometimes you have to knock really hard and long and loud to get a response and to find the answer but it's there. Listen, quietly. Follow your gut, honor your intuition and deal.

Summary
There is no doubt these are tough times, but there will always be tough times. That's life. Get used to it. A successful life is not a life without problems. A successful life is a life in which we learn to overcome problems. And how do we that? There may be many ways to toughing it out in tough times, but certainly having resolve, being resilient and creatively resourceful is one of them.
